Everything you need to use Origin, our portable espresso maker, is on this page: your first brew, hot or cold water, grounds or capsules, espresso on a road trip and cleaning. This guide from Premierien walks through each one, so jump to the part you need or read it top to bottom before your first cup.
Key takeaways
- Your first brew is four steps: charge it, add water, load your coffee, press the button.
- Use about 50 ml of water for a single shot or 70 ml for a double, never past the MAX line.
- Cold water: hold the button for 2 seconds and Origin heats it to 92°C. Hot water: double-press.
- Rinse the basket or adapter right after every brew, and never put the main body under running water.
Your first brew with Origin
Using Origin for the first time comes down to four steps: charge it, add water, load grounds or a capsule, and press the button. Here's each one, from the box to the rinse.
1. Unbox and look around
In the box you'll find Origin, the grounds basket with its lid, the Nespresso® compatible adapter, the Dolce Gusto® compatible holder and the travel cup that caps the base.
Lay them out on a table so you know which part is which. Before your first coffee, rinse the basket and both adapters in clean water and let them dry.
2. Charge it
The USB-C port sits on the back of Origin under a rubber cover. Lift the cover, plug in, and charge it fully before your first trip.
A wall adapter, a laptop, a power bank or a car charger all work. When it's done, press the cover back down so the port stays dry.
3. Add water up to the line

Take off the top and pour water into the steel tank. Use about 50 ml for a single shot or 70 ml for a double, and never go past the MAX line.
The tank holds 100 ml at most. The water can be hot or cold: which one you pour decides which button press you use.
4. Load grounds or a capsule

Pick one and fit the matching part to Origin:
-
Fresh groundsFill the basket with espresso-fine coffee, level it, close the lid.
-
Nespresso Original compatibleDrop the capsule into the Nespresso compatible adapter.
-
Dolce Gusto compatibleSeat the capsule in the Dolce Gusto compatible holder. Milk pods work too.
5. Press the button
Hold Origin upright over the travel cup or any small cup. With cold water, hold the button for 2 seconds; with hot water, double-press.
The pump peaks at 19 bar and holds 9–12 bar while the shot pours, and that's what builds the crema. Keep it steady while it works. Hot water or cold water? explains which press to use when.
6. Taste it
Give the shot a slow stir and taste it. If it runs thin and fast with grounds, try a slightly finer grind or a fuller basket next time.
If it barely drips, go a touch coarser. Change one thing at a time and you'll find your shot quickly.
7. Rinse before you pack it
Clean up while the coffee is still loose: empty the basket or capsule, rinse the part, run one brew of clean water with no coffee, and wipe the body. It takes about a minute, and How to clean Origin has the full routine.
Gear in this guide
Origin 3-in-1 Portable Espresso MakerHeats its own water to 92°C and brews from grounds or compatible capsules. Four colors.
Hot water or cold water?
Origin heats water in its own steel tank, so you never need a kettle. Got hot water already? Skip the heating and brew straight away. The button press tells Origin which one you poured:
-
Cold water: hold for 2 secondsOrigin heats the water to 92°C, then brews.
-
Hot water: double-pressOrigin skips the heating and brews right away.
Cold water: let Origin heat it

Pour water straight from your bottle, hold the button for 2 seconds and let go. Origin heats the water to 92°C and then starts the shot on its own.
Reach for it when there's no kettle around: a trailhead, a beach, your desk far from the kitchen, a parking lot on a road trip.
Why 92°C?
Espresso tastes best brewed with water just below boiling.
Too hot and you pull out harsh, bitter notes; too cool and the shot comes out thin and sour. 92°C sits in that sweet spot, so cold water isn't a shortcut: hold the button and the shot still brews at 92°C.
Hot water: save the battery
If you've already got hot water, from a kettle, a camp stove or a thermos, pour it in and double-press. Heating water takes battery, so starting hot saves some for later in the day.
Which one should you use?
- Hot water nearby? Pour it in and double-press. It's the quickest route to a shot.
- Only cold water? Hold for 2 seconds and let Origin do the heating.
- Brewing for two? Use hot water from a kettle or stove if you have it, so the second cup is right behind the first.
- Not sure what you poured? If it isn't clearly hot, treat it as cold and hold for 2 seconds.
A few tips either way: use water you'd drink (filter or treat it before it goes in the tank outdoors), measure the same 50 or 70 ml every time, and warm your cup with a splash of hot water so the shot stays hot longer.
Grounds or capsules: what to pack
Pack capsules when you want zero mess, like in the car or at work, and fresh grounds when you've got time for a better cup. Each has its own part, and every one of them comes in the box:
-
Grounds basket with lidFor fresh ground coffee.
-
Nespresso compatible adapterFor Nespresso Original compatible capsules.
-
Dolce Gusto compatible holderFor Dolce Gusto compatible capsules, milk pods included.
Fresh grounds

Grounds open up every roaster and every bean, and they're usually the cheapest way to make a cup.
- Grind fine. Espresso needs a fine grind, much finer than drip or pour-over. A bag sold as "espresso grind" is a good start.
- Fill it the same way every time. Fill the basket, level it off and press it gently flat. An even bed matters more than force. Wipe the rim, then close the lid.
- Read the shot. Thin and sour: go a little finer or fill a little fuller. Barely dripping and harsh: go a little coarser.
From our own camping trip: we brewed with ground coffee in the parked car.
The shots came out rich and bold under a thick, foamy crema, at about 80°C (176°F) in the cup, and the pump ran quiet and steady with no choking. We made 10 cups over the trip without recharging.
Nespresso Original compatible capsules
These are the small capsules made for the Original line of machines. Lots of coffee brands make them, so they're easy to find in grocery stores and online.
Look for "Original" on the box: Vertuo capsules are a different format, and Origin doesn't take them. They're the ones we grab for the car, the office and early starts.
Dolce Gusto compatible capsules
If you already own a Dolce Gusto machine at home, Origin lets you take the capsules you already buy on the road. Origin's tank holds 100 ml, so espresso-style and short coffee capsules suit it best.
Milk pods work too: brew the milk pod, top up the water, then brew the coffee pod into the same cup for a latte or cappuccino.
So, which should you pack?
- A weekend at camp: fresh grounds in an airtight jar. You've got time, and the cup is worth it.
- A road trip or a work week: capsules. Nothing to measure, nothing loose in the car.
- A long trip: both. A few capsules for busy mornings, a bag of grounds for slow ones.
- Not sure yet: start with whatever's already in your kitchen.
Espresso on a road trip
The easiest way to get real espresso on a road trip is to brew it yourself at the pull-off. Origin is about the size of a water bottle, runs on its own battery and heats its own water.
Here's how we ride, charge and pack it when the car is the kitchen.
Where it rides
At 75 × 248 mm, Origin slips into most cup holders like a water bottle, with the travel cup capping the base. It's 75 mm wide, so check yours. Keep it upright with the top closed, and it's ready whenever you stop.
Brew when you're parked

Hot coffee and a moving car don't mix. Pull over at a rest stop, a trailhead or a view worth stopping for, then brew: water from your bottle and a 2-second hold, or a thermos and a double-press.
Charge it from the car
A USB-C car charger keeps Origin topped up between stops. Its input is 10V · 2.25A, so check your charger's label and pick one that supports that; a power bank or a laptop works too.
Start every trip with a full charge, top it up while you drive, and close the rubber cover after unplugging so dust and drips stay out.
The packing list

-
1Origin, fully chargedWith the travel cup on the base.
-
2Your coffeeCapsules, or espresso-grind coffee in an airtight jar.
-
3The right partGrounds basket with lid, or the adapter for your capsules.
-
4WaterA full bottle, plus a thermos of hot water if you have one.
-
5USB-C car charger and cableSo the battery keeps up with the miles.
-
6A cloth and a zip bagFor drips, used grounds and used capsules.
Nice to have: the Travel Case keeps Origin and its parts together in one place, and an Espresso Tumbler gives you a proper cup at the tailgate.
Leave the stop as you found it
Pack out what you bring. Used capsules ride home in the zip bag until you can recycle or bin them, and coffee grounds go in the trash like any food scrap. Rinse away from streams and lakes.
How to clean Origin
Rinse the basket or adapter right after you brew, run one shot of clean hot water through it, and wipe the body. It takes about a minute. Old coffee oils make the next shot taste flat or bitter, so don't skip it.
Know what gets wet
-
Grounds basket and lidRinse under running water after every brew.
-
Capsule adaptersThe Nespresso compatible adapter and Dolce Gusto compatible holder.
-
Travel cupWash it like any cup.
-
Main bodyWipe only. It holds the battery and the electronics.
After every brew

- Empty it. Knock the used grounds out of the basket, or take out the used capsule.
- Rinse the basket or adapter in clean water. A soft brush helps with grounds stuck to the edges.
- Flush the machine. Put the clean basket back, add clean hot water and run one brew with no coffee in it.
- Wipe the outside with a damp cloth, then dry it.
- Let the parts air-dry before you pack them.
Never put the main body under running water
This is the one rule that matters most. Origin has a battery and electronics inside, so never hold the main body under the tap and never put it in water.
Water goes in the tank, and the outside gets a damp cloth. Keep the USB-C cover closed while you clean, and make sure the port is completely dry before you plug in a charger.
Once a week
- Wash the basket, lid and adapters by hand in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, then rinse well so there's no soap taste left.
- Check the silicone seals for trapped grounds and wipe them gently.
- Freshen the tank. If it smells stale, run a couple of brews of clean hot water through it.
- Skip the scouring pads and harsh cleaners. A soft cloth is kinder to the steel and the seals.
Cleaning away from home
No sink at camp or in the car? A splash from your water bottle is enough to rinse the basket or adapter.
Knock the used grounds into a zip bag, rinse, run one brew of clean hot water into a spare cup, and wipe the body with a cloth. Give everything a proper wash at the next sink.
Dry it before you pack it
Water left in the tank or in a closed case turns stale fast. Empty the tank after your last brew of the day, let every part dry in the open air, and store Origin with the basket or adapter off so air can move through.
On the road, the dashboard or a picnic table works as a drying rack.
Conclusion: from the box to the rinse
Charge it, fill to the line, load your coffee and press: hold for cold water, double-press for hot.
Pack grounds or capsules for the trip, brew when you're parked, and rinse for a minute after every cup. After two or three brews you won't need this page.

FAQs
What comes in the box?
Origin, the grounds basket with its lid, the Nespresso compatible adapter, the Dolce Gusto compatible holder and the travel cup that caps the base. Everything you need to brew all three kinds of coffee is there.
How much water do I use?
About 50 ml for a single shot or 70 ml for a double. The tank holds 100 ml at most, so never fill past the MAX line. Hot or cold water both work.
What temperature does Origin brew at?
With cold water, hold the button for 2 seconds and Origin heats it to 92°C (198°F), a good temperature for espresso, before it starts the shot. With hot water, double-press and it brews right away.
Does heating cold water use more battery?
Yes. Heating is the part that uses most of the charge, so pour in hot water from a kettle or thermos when you have it and double-press to save battery for later.
Which capsules does Origin take?
Nespresso Original compatible capsules and Dolce Gusto compatible capsules, milk pods included, each in its own part. It doesn't take Vertuo capsules, which are a different format.
Can I put the parts in the dishwasher?
We recommend washing the basket, lid and adapters by hand in warm water with a little mild soap. Never put the main body in water or a dishwasher, because it holds the battery and electronics.
Should I descale it?
If you see white mineral marks or a shot runs differently than usual, email support@premierien.com before trying any descaler, and we'll help you sort it out.
